Since 2001, Genzyme has a manufacturing facility in Geel (Belgium) designed to produce therapeutic proteins. The manufacturing facility comprises a continuous production line for the manufacturing of enzymes for enzyme replacement therapies and a fed-batch production line for the manufacturing of therapeutic monoclonal antibodies. The most important product is the enzyme replacement therapy for Pompe disease, a rare genetic, often fatal, disease of the muscle. Regulatory approval for commercial production of this enzyme was received in 2009-2010 for the EU, Japan, Canada, US and Brazil.

Oxyrane Belgium
Oxyrane is a private biotechnology company developing enzyme replacement therapies (ERTs) for lysosomal storage diseases (LSDs) based on research conducted in Ghent, Belgium. Lysosomal storage diseases are a class of inherited disorders which result from a deficiency in one of the enzymes responsible for intracellular recycling. These enzymes are naturally produced within cells and guided to the lysosome – a sub-cellular compartment where recycling occurs – by a specific targeting structure called mannose 6-phosphate (M6P).
