What is BelTox?
The Belgian Society of Toxicology and Ecotoxicology, abbreviated as BelTox, was founded in 1988 and is a member of the European Societies of Toxicology (EUROTOX) which is an umbrella organization for all toxicology societies in Europe.
What is the goal of BelTox?
BelTox aims to improve chemical hazard and risk assessment practices in Belgium by promoting regular scientific exchange on topics related to (eco)toxicology among students and professionals from scientific institutions, academia, authorities, industry, consulting companies and contract research organisations (CROs).
The scope of our activities includes the study of potential adverse effects on health and the environment of a large variety of natural and man-made substances including environmental pollutants, industrial chemicals, pesticides, biocides, food contaminants, food additives, cosmetics, human and veterinary medicines, natural toxins and genetically modified organisms.
What are the activities of BelTox?
The main objective of BelTox is to establish contacts between scientists in all fields of (eco)toxicology in Belgium, facilitate the exchange of knowledge and encourage research initiatives and collaborations.
This is achieved by setting up a variety of activities:
- Annual meeting on various scientific and regulatory themes including a young scientist competition,
- Introduction courses on (eco)toxicology for professionals who did not receive training in this area, but who are confronted with hazard and risk assessment of chemicals via their activities (e.g. regulators, lawyers, members of trade associations, product safety managers, industrial hygienists, occupational physicians),
- Advanced toxicology courses and workshops on particular topics,
- 'Belgian Chapter of European Registered Toxicologists'. This register recognizes professionals in the field of (eco)toxicology based on a peer review process. The Belgian Register currently includes 71 professionals in (eco)toxicology.
How is BelTox organized?
The management board takes care of the daily administration of the society assisted by a permanent secretariat. The Steering Committee oversees and gives direction to the activities and is comprised of professionals from academia, scientific institutes, industry, CRO's and consulting companies active in different fields of (eco)toxicology.
