UHasselt Centre for Environmental Sciences (CMK)

The Centre for Environmental Sciences (CMK) at Hasselt University is striving to be an international academic leader in holistic, multi-, and transdisciplinary analyses pertaining to the environment, a source of robust science-driven advice to public and private decision-makers from the local to the international level, and an active promoter of academic and educational expertise in developed and developing countries.

CMK is an agent of societal change from the local to the global level, by means of academic discovery, dissemination and implementation: CMK research addresses challenges of high societal urgency that require analyses that span across the boundaries of different scientific domains and disciplines, and necessitate fundamental as well as applied research:

● Understanding influences of the environment on organisms

● Developing and assessing sustainable clean technologies to mitigate influences of the environment on organisms

● Monitoring, valuing and optimizing biodiversity and ecosystem services under different stress conditions, including climate change.

CMK collaborates nationally and internationally with other knowledge institutions, with governments and governmental agencies, with companies and other actors from a civic society, creates knowledge and insights and offers solutions for society’s big challenges. Within Hasselt University, CMK continues to serve as a key institutionalized home for research cutting across disciplines that provides holistic answers to complex societal issues. CMK promotes critical thinking – both within our research agenda and our education programs. CMK’s success rests upon the contribution of its individual members, on their passion for research and for scientific discovery that questions the status-quo and leads to a better understanding of scientific and societal questions, and, ultimately, to novel solutions for society’s big challenges.
