Bart De Wever has been general chairman of N-VA since 2004. Since January 1, 2013 Bart is also mayor of Antwerp.
Bart studied history at Ufsia and KU Leuven. During his student days he was a member of the Liberaal Vlaams Studenten Verbond and of the Katholiek Vlaams Hoogstudentenverbond. He was also editor-in-chief of “Tegenstroom” and “Ons Leven”.
Bart De Wever interrupted his academic career to devote himself full-time to politics. In 1996 he became a district councilor for the Volksunie in Berchem. After the collapse of the VU, he was one of the founders of the N-VA.
In 2004 he won a seat in the Flemish Parliament. Three years later he became a Member of Parliament, but in 2009 he moved again to the Flemish Parliament. Between 2010 and 2012, he was also a community senator.
Bart De Wever wants to make the N-VA the people's party of Flanders that stands up for the interests of 6.5 million Flemings. This requires a thorough change, both socio-economically and politically, through the introduction of a confederal structure. Togetherness and responsibility are the key words here.
Bart De Wever is a “fan” of Julius Caesar and knows just about everything to do with Ancient Rome. His Latin sayings are legendary, such as “Nil Volentibus Arduum” (Nothing is impossible for those who want).
