Stijn Dhondt, Head of the VIB Agro-incubator, manages a high-tech research site where he aims to catalyse the existing Agbiotech ecosystem and to support early-stage start-ups to accelerate innovative technologies for sustainable agriculture and food production. He earned the degree of Master in Bioscience Engineering from the Ghent University in 2006 and obtained a PhD in molecular plant sciences in 2012 in the group of Prof. Dirk Inzé at the VIB-UGent center for Plant Systems Biology. He continued his research focusing on automated plant phenotyping, mainly funded by a postdoctoral fellowship of the Research Foundation Flanders. He was involved in the development and installation of several automated phenotyping platforms, and supports in the establishment of the international research infrastructure for plant phenotyping, called EMPHASIS. He very much likes to be active at the interface between academia and industry, especially when it comes to implementing vibrant ideas combining plant research, technological engineering , and computational developments towards a green and sustainable future.
